Bel Ami

I heard about this movie early in February before its world premiere at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival on 17 February 2012. I heard that the story was based on a French novel by Guy de Maupassant in1885, and that the story was about a poor man that earns his way to becoming rich by manipulating a series of powerful, intelligent, and wealthy mistresses. The movie stars Robert PattinsonUma ThurmanKristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci and Colm Meaney.

That sounded interesting to me! So after all this time, I was able to watch it today!

Even though the movie got negative reviews and low ratings, I still enjoyed watching it and liked because it reminded me of life around me that is still the same after 127 years.

Bel Ami in our daily lives

I was intrigued by the movie since it reminded me of a reality that we are still facing everyday in our societies where both men and women earn their way in life by manipulating one another.

I was raised in a family whose philosophy was: “if you plant, you get the fruit of your labor” I have been always convinced by this philosophy, yet too sad that most of the times it is not applicable anymore. Some people are planting while others are getting the fruits of their labor…  I call these people Free Riders! They are people that enjoy a ride that someone else has paid for.

Let’s play the devil’s advocate

Someone once told me that it doesn’t matter how I get the work done, what matters is that I get it done… I believe that George Duroy believed that too… was he right?

My answer: He can do whatever he believes is right (there is no right or wrong), and I will always do what I believe is right… which is work my way to wherever I want to go and sleep happy!

Did you watch the movie? What do you think about it?

What do you have to say...
