How to Create and Maintain a Medicine Cabinet

At home, you should have a medicine cabinet where you can store all your medicine and first aid kit. This closet needs to be located in a place with little humidity and in a place where kids cannot reach it. It should be a room, in where the temperature does not fluctuate in order to preserve the medicine inside it. This cabinet should not be huge; it should be big enough to accommodate your medicine supplies. Before buying or making a cabinet, gather all your medicine in order to decide on the size that you need. You can buy a readymade cabinet that comes in different sizes and shapes.

HERE’S HOW YOU NEED TO ORGANIZE YOUR MEDICINE CABINET:

1. FIRST IN FIRST OUT (FIFO) METHODOLOGY

This method is always suggested for items that have a shelf life making sure that nothing goes expired. Make sure to consume the items that were bought first, this way you are sure nothing expires without using it.

2. CHECK EXPIRATION BEFORE CONSUMING MEDICINE

Every time you consume a medicine you should check its expiration date just to be on the safe side.

3. KEEP IT CLEAN

Your medicine should always stay clean. Make sure to clean it every quarter and throw away any expired medicine.

4. SET ALARMS FOR EXPIRATION DATES

On your phone or personal organizer, write reminders of the days when each medicine will expire. Each time you buy a medicine, write its expiration date, this way, it won’t take long and you still won’t forget to throw the medicine in time.

5. ORGANIZE BY TYPE

Place soluble medicine together, pills together and first aid kit together. Place the items in a way where you can see them, and make sure to return them the way they were after consuming them.

6. MAKE A CHECKLIST

Keep a checklist with all the items inside the closet and keep the checklist updated, this way, you never run out of something the day you need it.

7. STAY HEALTHY

Even that you have all the medicines at home doesn’t mean that you need to consume them frequently. Only take medicine when other healthy home remedies are not an option.
